Hi everybody! I'm your mildly friendly, very sarcastic, co-admin here, and I'm here to walk you through the magical world of characters!
They're everywhere!
In plays... In movies... In books... In this...
Now, while most people seem to want to be the big exception to everything, I would like to point something out:
Being the oh-so-special person, ain't gonna be so special if everybody does it. So how do you make your character stand out more? For one, give them an interesting life story. You can go ahead and summerize your background, but giving backstory can help set your character apart, or prove that you're being another fish in the sea.
If you want to be [glow=red,2,300]ORIGINAL[/glow]
There are a number of things you can do.
Firstly, at the moment there aren't that many apps, and they ain't all that long. Would it kill ya to read them?
...
Well, maybe just a little.
But, if you want to know what some people do, lots of people like to have the intelligent type. Lots of people like to have the social butterfly. Lots of people like to have the ugly-duckling type of character -that is, a rags-to-riches tale of sorts.
Not on this site, but on RP sites in general!
So, you wanna be original? Not just another clone?
You can do that, no problem. Read the apps. See what others have done and go out of your way to avoid copying them!
Someone already made a black belt? Well, time to look at boxing. Someone already carries a katana? Well, time to look at guns. Someone already smokes? Well, time to make a doctor.
...
What? We can't ALL be fighters.
Ah, that reminds me. The fighter type. Now, why would you want a fighter type anyways? Ask the question to yourself, type an answer in a word doc, and then come back to this app. Here, I'll even make coffee while you do that!
*Makes coffee*
Ok, so, do you have your answer? Now, why did you make the fighter to begin with? Was it to make the character stand out, even if they don't use the fighting abilities? It shouldn't be! Practicality! Learn what it is.
Now, in what situations can a knife be useful? Sure it can be good for self defense, or for a little assassination, but it can also be used for something else. Like scraping that bark off that weird sticky tree! Oh look! The sticky stuff is like maple syrup!
Oh shoot! There are these weird vines keeping me from moving through this area. Well, good thing I have this Katana. Now all I gotta do is hack away at them. Sweet, it worked!
You see where I'm trying to get with this? (If no, please shoot yourself in the foot.*)
Now, one more tiny detail:
Your character can be multitalented. But they aren't what I like to call...
[glow=red,2,300]MARY SUE[/glow]
That is, a character who is pretty much perfect in every way. So, your wild, calm, respectful fifteen-year-old? Mary sue.
Your genuis, athletic, superpowered, and oh-so-beautiful ten-year old? No.
Your emo little girl with the past so tragic that she's lucky to have pulled through it and she can capture the hearts of anyone and everyone she meets? ANTI SUE! (Which is like a Mary Sue, but with a more tragic story.)
Then there's another question...
Can you play your character?
Can you play them effectively?
Are they going to make you want to kill them?
No? Ok, byyyyyyyye!
...
If you answered "no" to "One" and "Two," then we've got some issues. You want to play a scientist but you don't know didly about science? Wait. Just wait. You want to play a Karate MASTER but don't know didly about Karate? Wait for someone else, or learn.
In short, for those of you who don't want to read all that, READ THE APPS OF OTHERS WHEN MAKING A CHARACTER AND THINK ABOUT THE CHARACTER YOU WANT TO PLAY! Make sure you can actually play them, and always eat your veggies!
